Square
Enix as a whole seems to be listening more closely to its fans lately.
When Final Fantasy Type-0 HD was released, it came with an almost
sickening camera system with absurd amounts of motion blur. For a while,
there was no hope of it being fixed. But on the day Episode Duscae's
patch launched, the camera for Type-0 also got patched, addressing the
game's biggest issue. And the fact that Episode Duscae, a demo, got patched at all seems
to signify that Square wants to make sure the final game turns out
well, and that they don't want to repeat their mistakes from Final Fantasy XIII.
It's still hard to believe it's finally happening. |
Not
only that, they've got a slew of new games coming up that many fans
have wanted for a long time. Star Ocean 5: Integrity and Faithlessness
looks really good, and shows that the series is still alive after all.
Bravely Second seems to address the issues the original game had. And of
course, there was the announcement of the Final Fantasy VII Remake at
E3 2015. We don't know how the remake will turn out yet, but the fact
that they're willing to do this at all means they're either desperate or
actually listening to fan feedback. Considering these past few months
and what's happened with them, though, I'm inclined to believe it's the
latter.
Of
course, there's still a way to go before Square Enix can completely
redeem itself. Dragon Quest VII and VIII on the 3DS still have yet to be
localized, and we only have a small taste of Final Fantasy XV. It's
true that the demo is very fun to play, but we don't know much
about the full game yet - not even a release date. As a whole, things
are looking up, but we still have to wait until their new games are
released before we can tell if they've redeemed themselves or not.
