Smash Bros. 3DS Demo Impressions

Well, I managed to get lucky and got a code to download the eShop Smash Bros. 3DS Demo. Here’s what I think about it.

  • The game as a whole plays a bit faster than Brawl (though I can’t really compare since I haven’t played Brawl in ages because I don’t have the game anymore).
  • You’re given only 5 characters and 1 stage to play around with. Kind of disappointing. Can’t change match rules either.
  • The characters you’re given are: Mario, Link, Pikachu, Mega Man, and Villager.
  • I played as Mega Man the most out of all the characters, and I think he’s pretty good! His Smash attacks seem pretty powerful, and his specials are pretty neat too. His recovery seems to function similarly to Sonic’s, though with Rush Coil instead of a spring. As gameplay videos have shown, his Final Smash is to shoot the Black Hole bomb. Anyone who gets caught in it will be on the receiving end of a huge blast from the various incarnations of Mega Man. It seems to do around 40% damage, and can launch foes pretty far.
  • Link now gets his Jump Slash as a dash attack. EDIT: In general, most of Link's attacks are faster and stronger.
  • Mario’s FLUDD seems to have more range and shoots faster. He seems a little faster in general.
  • I played as Pikachu and Villager the least, so I can’t say much on them. Pikachu seems to be the same. EDIT: Pikachu seems to play a little faster than in Brawl, but is weak. However, his moves have been slightly buffed. Skull Bash goes farther, and Thunder now spawns the lightning strike from a cloud. Opponents hit by the attack near the cloud get Meteor Smashed back down, allowing Pikachu to follow up with another attack.
  • The game runs at a smooth 60 frames per second, which is really nice.
  • The Final Destination mode of each stage (NO ITEMS FOX ONLY FINAL DESTINATION, anyone?) seems to also turn off all items. I really like 1 on 1 matches here, it's intense and strategic.
